Azure DevOps Migration Platform

The successor to the Migration Tools

The open-source Azure DevOps Migration Tools have carried hundreds of migrations. Their design reflects their origin: a command-line tool an engineer runs, watches, and re-runs. That model works. A decade of migrations has also taught us what it costs: long feedback loops on large collections, observability you have to build yourself, and configuration knowledge that lives in the operator’s head.

The Azure DevOps Migration Platform is the answer, and it will replace the Migration Tools. It migrates through a portable, auditable file package rather than directly between live systems: export once, prepare and validate offline, import when you are ready. That design covers what the current tools cannot: air-gapped networks, migrations between organisations, and validation as a first-class output rather than an afterthought.

Like the tools it succeeds, it is open source and free, and it is available now on GitHub .

It is experimental. That is a phase, not an identity. It means the platform is under active development, interfaces will change, and you should expect rough edges. What you can rely on:

• It is built by the same team that created and maintains the Migration Tools.
• It is designed for what the CLI model cannot do well: scale, resumability, offline preparation and validation, and live observability of long-running migrations.
• It is self-hosted and auditable. Your data moves through a package you can inspect, on infrastructure you control.
